One of a series of sketches – which I used to gain a greater knowledge of my subject; and I also used them as points of reference for the larger paintings which followed. I usually find that rough sketches such as these are a good way to familiarise me with the individual elements of a site – exploring the same from different angles, until I am satisfied with a particular viewpoint. I can then peruse all of the different images in order to establish what I consider to be the best composition for the main, larger work.
