Painter Banks on Success after joining Elite Artist List

Elite Artist William Serridge

The Chronicle, 1986

Landscape painter, William Serridge, is in the frame for success after joining a roll call of Wales’s most talented artists.

The father from Deeside went back to college to brush up on his artistic skills in the hope that one day he would be good enough to practice as a professional artist.

That dream appears to have come true now that William from St Marks Avenue, Connah’s Quay is listed on what is probably Principality’s most prestigious arts register, run by the Arts Council for Wales.

About 1,000 Welsh artists are named on the register together with examples of their work. The list is available to anyone interested in commissioning works of art or who wants to reproduce an artist’s work. William, 38, is settling into his new career quite happily.

As a teenager, he had developed an interest in landscapes and even after leaving school he always kept a painting on the go, which could be work on during evenings and weekends. His enjoyment for art never waned; and in 1993, William decided to go back to college for proper training.

Enrolling at Deeside College he sailed through a BTEC diploma in design and went on to an advanced GNVQ, which he completed this year. His biggest boost came after meeting Alyn and Deeside MP Barry Jones (now Lord Jones) during a tour of the college. “Mr Jones took an interest in what I was doing, and introduced me to the Arts Council of Wales. Now they’ve offered me membership which means I’m listed on their register.”
